There's a short list of beaches on St. Thomas that locals will actually name when asked, and Lindquist is near the top of it. It sits inside Smith Bay Park on the east end, about ten minutes from our Sapphire Beach condo, and it's the beach we send people to when they want the postcard without the crowd that usually comes with it.
What makes it different
It's protected parkland, which means no resort, no vendors lining the sand, and no development crowding the treeline. The beach is a long crescent of soft pale sand with sea grape and palms behind it for shade, and the water is shallow, clear, and unusually calm — the reef and the cays out front take most of the energy out of the swell before it arrives.
The result is the rarest combination on this island: a beach that photographs like the brochure and is also genuinely quiet on a weekday.
The practical details
There's a $5 per person entrance fee, collected at the gate. There are restrooms and a lifeguard, which puts it ahead of most beaches here on facilities and is a real factor with young kids.
What there isn't: food. No beach bar, no snack truck you can count on. Bring a cooler and lunch, or plan to eat afterward. Bring shade too — there's tree cover, but the good spots go early, and a pop-up tent means you're not negotiating for a palm.
The gate keeps park hours rather than staying open at all times, so this isn't a sunset-beach plan. Treat it as a morning-to-late-afternoon beach and you'll never have a problem.
When to go, and when not to
Weekday mornings are the sweet spot. It's calm, the light is good, and you'll share a very large beach with a manageable number of people.
Weekends are a different beach. Lindquist is a locals' beach on Saturdays and Sundays — family cookouts, music, kids everywhere — which is a great scene if that's what you want and a poor choice if you came for silence. Neither is wrong; just know which one you booked.
Cruise ship days matter less here than at Magens Bay or Coki, since the excursion buses mostly go elsewhere. That's a large part of the appeal.
Snorkeling
Modest, and worth setting expectations on. The bottom is mostly sand and grass, which is lovely for swimming and light on things to look at. Work toward the rocky edges and you'll find some structure and fish, but if reef is the goal, the water in front of Sapphire is a better use of a mask.
