Staying Steps From the Sand: What Beachfront Actually Means on St. Thomas

September 24, 2026

Every listing on this island says beachfront, ocean view, or steps to the beach, and those three phrases can describe wildly different mornings. We own one of each, more or less, so we've watched how guests actually use them.

The test is whether you go back mid-day

A place is genuinely beachfront when you'll walk down twice before lunch. Not once, as an outing — twice, casually, because you forgot your book and it isn't a trip. That's the whole difference. At our Sapphire Beach condo the sand is past the palms at the edge of the patio, and guests end up in the water three or four times a day without ever making a plan to. Beach chairs, coolers, and snorkel gear are already there, so nothing has to be rented or loaded into a car.

"Ocean view" is a different, also good, thing. It means the water is the backdrop to your morning coffee and your evening drink, and getting in it is a short drive. Our hillside place works that way, and the people who love it love it for the breeze, the quiet, and the view down over the bays — the tradeoff being that a swim is a decision rather than a reflex.

Which one you want depends on the trip

If you're traveling with kids, or with someone who wants to nap between swims, take the beachfront. The number of small frictions it removes is genuinely larger than it sounds on paper.

If you're after quiet, cooking dinner at home, and a view worth staring at — and you're renting a car anyway — the hillside is the better week. It's also cooler at night, which matters more in late summer than people expect.

We wrote a longer side-by-side in Sapphire Beach vs Mahogany Run if you're genuinely torn. Either way, book the dates directly on the deals page — the same weeks run cheaper here than through the listing sites, which is the one bit of advice we'll repeat forever.
