How Far Is Everything? Honest Drive Times on St. Thomas

October 8, 2026

St. Thomas is thirteen miles long, which makes every distance on the map look like nothing and every drive take longer than you planned. The roads are two-lane, steep, and full of switchbacks; there is no highway; and the one stretch through Charlotte Amalie can add twenty minutes for reasons that have nothing to do with distance. Here's what things actually take.

From the east end (Sapphire)

  • Red Hook: about six minutes. Ferry dock, grocery store, and most of the east end's eating and drinking.
  • The St. John ferry: the same six minutes, plus the twenty-minute crossing to Cruz Bay. Boats run roughly hourly from early morning.
  • Lindquist Beach: about ten minutes.
  • Secret Harbour, Coki, Vessup: all inside fifteen minutes. Every beach worth the drive from here is in that radius.
  • The airport: about twenty-five minutes on a clear run. On a cruise-ship afternoon or at rush hour through town, call it forty-five. Arrival day goes smoother if you plan for the second number.
  • Magens Bay: a bit over the ridge and down the other side — allow twenty-five to thirty, and go before ten or after three.

From the north side (Mahogany Run)

  • Magens Bay: about fifteen minutes down the north side of the ridge.
  • Hull Bay: about ten minutes.
  • Red Hook and the ferry: about twelve minutes.
  • Downtown Charlotte Amalie: fifteen to twenty, depending on the ship schedule.
  • The airport: roughly twenty-five to thirty-five minutes.

The pattern holds: from either of our places, you're inside fifteen minutes of a beach you'd be happy with, and inside half an hour of almost everything else on the island.

The things that actually change the number

Cruise ships. Two or three ships in port turns downtown into a different road. The port schedule is public — check it before you plan a morning that routes through Charlotte Amalie.

School traffic and rush hour. Yes, there is one. Mornings around eight and afternoons around five.

Rain. A squall slows everyone down on the switchbacks for fifteen minutes.

Darkness. Sunset is quick here and the roads have no lights. A drive you did in twenty minutes at noon takes longer, and feels much longer, at eight at night.

The driving itself

Left side of the road, in American cars with the wheel on the left — a genuine local quirk that sounds worse than it is. Everyone drives slowly because the roads require it, and after the first thirty minutes it stops being a thing you're thinking about. We put the whole story in driving on St. Thomas.

If you'd rather not: taxis run on a per-person rate, roughly $10–15 per person for shared runs, with stands at the airport, Red Hook, Charlotte Amalie, and Havensight. Open-air safari taxis are the local option at around $2–5 a ride if your route matches theirs. There is no Uber here.

How to actually plan a day

Pick one thing per half-day and let the drive be part of it. The classic north-shore circuit — the overlooks, Magens, a stop for lunch — is ninety minutes of driving with stops and a whole afternoon if the pull-offs keep winning.

What doesn't work is a day with three destinations on opposite ends of the island. You'll spend it in the car, on roads that deserve better attention than you'll be giving them.

Both of our places put you inside that fifteen-minute radius: Sapphire Beach on the water at the east end, Mahogany Seaview up in the hills on the north side. Current open weeks are on the deals page.
