Snorkeling Straight Off the Sand at Sapphire Beach

September 22, 2026

The thing that surprises most first-time guests is that the reef starts before you're out of your depth. You can see it from the sand — that darker patch where the turquoise goes mottled. That's coral, it's alive, and it's a two-minute swim away.

Where to get in

Head toward the rocky edges of the bay rather than straight out from the middle. The sandy middle is lovely for swimming and empty of anything to look at; the structure is along the sides, where the rock meets the water. Kick out slowly and let your eyes adjust — the first thing you'll notice is that there are far more fish than you expected, and then you'll start picking out the sea fans moving in the surge.

Morning is better. The east end is calmest before noon almost every day of the year, and calm water means clear water. By mid-afternoon the trade winds have usually put a chop on the surface that turns a great snorkel into a mediocre one.

The rule that matters

Don't stand on it, don't kick it, don't touch it. There's a sign on the path at Sapphire that says STAY OFF THE CORAL, and it isn't decoration — a fin blade does damage you won't feel and the reef won't recover from quickly. Float, don't wade, once you're over the dark patches. If you need to rest, swim back to sand first.

Reef-safe sunscreen, or better, a rash guard. The stuff that washes off a hundred people a day adds up in a bay this size.

Making it easy

Snorkel gear lives at the condo, so there's nothing to rent and no reason to drive anywhere on your first morning — which is really the argument for staying on this stretch of coast in the first place. If the wind is up and Sapphire is choppy, our calm-water guide covers where else on the east end the water goes still.

Open weeks and current discounts are on the deals page. Bring a mask; leave the boat charter for a different trip.
