Sapphire Beach gets recommended a lot for snorkeling, and the recommendation is usually right — but it's rarely specific enough to be useful. Here's what the water out front actually does, from people who look at it every morning.
Where the reef is
Don't swim straight out. The good stuff hugs the edges: work toward the rocky point on the right as you face the water, where the sand gives way to reef and the bottom stops being empty. The photo above is that transition — the pale turquoise band is shallow sand and grass, and the darker patches past it are what you came for. That "stay off the coral" sign down by the sand is not decoration. Coral takes decades to grow back from one careless fin kick, so float, don't stand.
Realistically you'll see parrotfish, sergeant majors, blue tang, the occasional ray sliding across the sand flats. Not an aquarium. A real reef, on a good day, doing real reef things.
Go early — this is the whole trick
Morning water on the east end is a different substance than afternoon water. The trades pick up as the day warms, and by two o'clock the surface is textured and the visibility drops. Before nine, it's often glass. If you take one piece of advice from this page, make it that one: set an alarm, get in early, have coffee after.
What to bring, and what not to bother with
A mask that actually seals matters more than anything else you could buy. Fins help; a snorkel vest helps more if you're not a confident swimmer. Skip the underwater camera housing on day one — spend the first swim just looking.
We keep snorkel gear at both rentals, so there's nothing to rent and nothing to haul through the airport. At our Sapphire Beach condo the walk from the patio to the water is short enough that people go in twice before lunch.
If the wind is wrong
Some days the east end is choppy and no amount of optimism fixes it. That's the day to head for the more sheltered pockets — our calm-water guide covers where the sea goes still when the trades are up. The travel guide maps the rest of the island's beaches by mood and conditions.
